ABOUT US
OUR BELIEFS & VALUES
Welcome to the Unitarian Universalists of Coastal Georgia!
"We are people of open minds, loving hearts, and helping hands.”

We come together as people of differing ages, gender identities, ethnicities, races, and abilities, who are interested in making our world a better place. Our congregation is part of the Unitarian Universalists Association (UUA), with headquarters in Boston, MA.

Unitarian Universalism is unique in that it does not have an official creed, or statement of beliefs. Instead, we support one another in our individual journeys toward spirituality. You may find Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Pagans, agnostics and atheists attending a UU congregation. We are also specifically welcoming to LGBTQ+ identifying individuals. Instead of being united by our beliefs, we are united by our values.

Instead of being united by our beliefs, we are united by our values.
LOVE IS THE POWER THAT HOLDS US TOGETHER
AND IS AT THE CENTER OF OUR SHARED VALUES,
WHICH ARE DEEPLY INTERCONNECTED.
-
Interdependence: We honor the interdependent web of all existence and acknowledge our place in it.
-
Pluralism: We are all sacred beings, diverse in culture, experience, and theology.
-
Justice: We work to be diverse multicultural Beloved Communities where all feel welcome and can thrive.
-
Transformation: We adapt to the changing world.
-
Generosity: We cultivate a spirit of gratitude and hope.
-
Equity: We declare that every person is inherently worthy and has the right to flourish with dignity,
love, and compassion.

A BRIEF HISTORY
In 1996, a group of like-minded residents of St. Simons Island incorporated the Fellowship that has become Unitarian Universalists of Coastal Georgia. For the first several years, members met in homes or other locations. In 2008, the group voted to move to Brunswick and found a suitable property for modification.

In 2001, the Reverend William R. Phillips, a Methodist minister and retired psychotherapist, was hired on a part-time basis. He led the fellowship until he retired in 2010. Upon Rev. Phillips' retirement, Reverend Lynne Garner served as minister from September, 2011 to July, 2014.

Beginning in September 2014, Reverend Dr. Jane Page became UUCG's practicing half-time minister, also serving half-time at the Unitarian Universalists Fellowship of Statesboro. On Sunday, September 18, 2016, an installation service was held to officially call Reverend Page to be the residing half-time minister for UUCG. In June of 2024, we celebrated her tenth anniversary.

Long time member, Beth Sutton, is our talented lay minister, who has been speaking on fourth Sundays since 2014. Reverend Clint Tawes is a monthly guest minister, who has been with us for several years. In 2023-2025, we also have the pleasure of having Randy Blasch as our intern minister.

OUR MINISTER

“I’m delighted to be serving as the minister of UUCG. I’m a native of Statesboro, born here in 1950. I’ve lived there my entire life with the exception of brief periods of time away for educational purposes. I was raised by hard working middle class folks and spent a great deal of time at the First Baptist Church in my youth. Actually, I remained in that church for much of my adult life as well, closeting my heretical beliefs! Life circumstances made it easier for me to leave in my late 40’s and I became a Unitarian Universalist. I have been in love with this faith tradition and the people within it since that time. I retired from Georgia Southern University as Professor and Department Chair Emerita (Dept. of Curriculum, Foundations, and Research) in 2005 and completed my seminary training the following year. (I began Meadville Lombard in 2001.) I was called to serve here in September 2014, and I’m currently serving half-time.
I share my life with my husband Dr. Greg Brock, my son, two grandsons, two great grandchildren, my mom and one fine dog.

In addition to serving UUCG half time, I serve the UU congregation in Statesboro, Georgia half time as well and live in both places. One of my favorite activities is enjoying nature in both Bulloch and Glynn counties.

I’m available for pastoral care in person (when I’m in town) or virtually via phone, email, or even Zoom (when I’m out of town). My contact information is below and I look forward to hearing from you.”
