The Rev. Lynne Garner Is Minister

The Rev. Lynne Garner began her duties as minister of Unitarian Universalists of Coastal Georgia in September 2011.
The Rev. Ms. Garner was approved by a vote of the congregation  at a special meeting following the Sunday service of May 22, 2011.
The hiring came after a six-month search by a Ministerial Search Team headed by Sarah McGettrick.  The search was necessitated by the retirement at the end of 2010 of the Rev. William Phillips, who was the church's first and only minister until the arrival of Ms. Garner.
The Rev. Ms. Garner previously was affiliated with the Third Unitarian Church of Chicago, where she assisted the pastor and gave occasional sermons. She is a native of Syracuse, NY, with a bachelor of arts in music from Syracuse University. She has a master’s in linguistics from Northeastern Illinois University and a master’s in divinity at Meadville Lombard Theological School in Chicago, one of two Unitarian seminaries.

Ms. Garner has taught at four colleges in the Chicago area, has been a substitute middle school teacher and has given private piano lessons. She was certified in Illinois to teach music, French, Spanish and English as a second language.

The Ministerial Search Committee recommended Ms. Garner after extensive interviewing, checking of references and hearing her preach in a neutral pulpit. The Committee earlier conducted and analyzed an extensive survey of the church's membership.  To see the results of that survey, click here.
Currently, the position of minister is half time.
